MORE THAN 300 PETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AT EVENT IN SÃO PAULO

On Saturday, January 24, 2026, the São Paulo City Hall will host a major pet adoption event at the Centro Municipal de Adoção in the Santana neighborhood. The event, titled “Recomeços: a new year, a new home,” will feature over 300 dogs and cats available for adoption, underlining the city’s ongoing commitment to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

Event Overview

The adoption fair will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing visitors the opportunity not only to adopt pets, but also to learn about basic pet care practices and responsible guardianship.

According to the São Paulo Municipal Health Secretariat, all animals offered for adoption have been:

  • Spayed or neutered
  • Vaccinated
  • Dewormed
  • Microchipped
  • Registered with the General Animal Registry (RGA)

These health precautions ensure that the animals are safe, healthy and ready for life with new families.

Adoption Requirements

Prospective adopters must meet certain criteria and bring necessary items to complete the adoption on the day of the event:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Provide a valid photo ID
  • Present a recent proof of residence
  • Pay a public adoption fee of R$ 35.80
  • Bring a transport crate for cats
  • Bring a collar and leash for dogs

These measures help ensure that pets are adopted by responsible individuals capable of providing stable homes.

Special Benefits for Senior Adoptions

A special feature of the event is the “Cuida Bem Idoso” card, which offers benefits to those who adopt pets aged 8 years or older. City residents who adopt a senior dog or cat will receive:

  • Priority and lifelong care
  • Access to any of the four public veterinary hospitals in São Paulo
(in the north, east, south and west zones)

This incentive encourages the adoption of older pets, who often face longer waits for permanent homes despite their loving dispositions.

Ongoing Adoption Opportunities

For those unable to attend the event, the Centro Municipal de Adoção remains open for visits and adoptions:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturdays and Sundays: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
    (excluding holidays)

This allows families additional opportunities to meet animals and adopt at their convenience.

Why Adoption Matters

In Brazil, millions of domestic animals live in shelters or on the streets, leading to widespread efforts to promote adoption and reduce abandonment. Pet adoption events like this are vital for raising awareness about responsible care, helping pets find loving homes while educating the public on long-term animal welfare

The “Recomeços” adoption event in São Paulo presents a meaningful chance for pets and families to connect, promoting responsible ownership and offering lasting companionship. With more than 300 dogs and cats ready for adoption, the event reflects ongoing efforts to support animal welfare and improve the lives of pets and people throughout the city.
